This Tahltan-Tlingit Carver Won A Huge Award: Watch Him At Work In This Video

Dempsey Bob is getting a 2021 Governor General’s Award.

Tahltan-Tlingit artist and Terrace local Dempsey Bob just won one of the biggest artistic awards in Canada. The master carver is recipient of the 2021 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts (GGArts Awards) Artistic Achievement Award.

But despite being at the top of the Canadian art world, Bob is humble and down to earth in a new video where he explains the things that inspire his work–being close to nature and its creatures–and his thoughts about making art that matters.

“As an artist, you’ve got to live up to your potential, or try to, and do what you could really do, use what you know,” Bob explains in the Canada Arts Council video. “That’s what I’m trying to do. I want to do the best work I can do. Because I realize that, in the end, that’s all that matters. So many things are going to be remembered. You’ve got to do some great work if you can.”
