Kitimat Is Killing It On COVID Vaccines As Immunization Rate Passes 80%

‘Celebration is the current feeling.’

If Kitimat were a country it would have one of the highest vaccination rates in the world.

The city recently passed the 80 percent mark for first doses among residents age 12 and over and health authorities are ecstatic.

“Celebration is the current feeling in Kitimat,” Northern Health writes on Facebook. “They are the second community in the North to reach this particular milestone, after Queen Charlotte. This success is due to the tireless efforts of the Haisla Nation, the First Nations Health Authority, and the Northern Health staff and vaccine planning team. Way to go Kitimat!”

The vaccine rate for Kitimat appears to be slightly higher than B.C.’s, which earlier this week had a rate of 76.1 percent for first doses.

Canada overall leads the world for first doses, surpassing the U.K., Israel, the U.S., Italy and Germany, although some countries have a higher fully vaccinated rate.

In Kitimat, the health team held up a sign that reads “80%”.

“Way to go Kitimat!” Northern Health said.
