Get To Know Smithers’ First Grammy Winner Alex Cuba In This Extended Interview

He was nominated for a Grammy four times before he won.

For many people across the province, Alex Cuba’s winning of a Grammy Award for an album he recorded in his basement in Smithers seemed to come out of nowhere.

But the Afro-Cuban musician had actually been recognized by The Recording Academy several times by that point.

“This was my fourth nomination,” Cuba says in an extended one-on-one interview with CTV News.

He was planning on attending the Grammy Awards in person but the timing clashed with some shows he was doing in the Okanagan. Cuba learned his new album had won on the drive home.

We highly recommend watching the entire 12-minute interview, where Cuba shares more details of his Grammy win, his early musician inspiration and what’s coming next for him.
